Abstract
This experiment was performed to find a new bulb material wild in Ulreung and Jeju do Island to find a possibility for their production as floricultural crops.
From July 1977 to September 1978, various survey and experiments were carried out (a) to study the characteristics of Lilium hansonii Leichtl. apud Baker, native in Ulreung do Island and of Narcissus tazella var. Chinensis Roem, native in Jeju do Island, (b) to determine a minimum bulb weight of native and imported Narcissus tazetta and Narcissus, ¢¥King Alfred¢¥ for flowering, and (c) to find the most favorable location far the bulb production of L. hansonii, L. longiflorum, ¢¥Georgia¢¥, native Narcissus tazetta and Narcissus, ¢¥King Alfred¢¥, Iris, ¢¥National Velvet¢¥, Freesia, ¢¥Reinbelt Golden Yellow¢¥, and Tulips, ¢¥Athleet¢¥ and ¢¥Purysima¢¥. The bulb production trial locations for this test were Suweon, Suchon, Pyungkwang or Daegu, Namhae, and Jeju.
L. hansonii was found only under the heavy shade of deep slope for a natural good drainage and was not existed with the L. lancifolium. The average bulb weight and circumference ranged from 20 to 25g and from 65 to 80§¯, respectively and the number of whorled leaf ranged from 9 to 10 for the first layer and from 7 to 10 for the second layer. Generally, two layers of whorled leaves or three layers of whorled leaves were noticed in the flowering plants. The average number of flowers ranged from 3 to 5 with variations of shape and spot in the petal.
N. tazetta var. chinensis wild in Jeju do Island was generally grown in the west coast of the Island between Jeju city and Suguipo. The average bulb weight showed variations from 36 to 65g and the number of flowers and leaves was between 4 and 7 and between 4 and 5, respectively. Although all the plant characteristics were similar as compared to the already known facts, flower type was mainly double flower form, which was not at all typical observed in Narcissus tazetta.
In the determination of the flowering bulb weight of native N. tazetta and ¢¥King Alfred¢¥ narcissus, at least 35g bulb must be used for the flower production and for forcing trial. Although no cold treatment was required in native N. tazetta, large sized bulb must be used. The imported N. tazetta and ¢¥King Alfred¢¥ narcissus was generally more than 25g in bulb weight for flowering.
In the bulb production trial, the most favorable places for L. hansonii, L. longiflorum, Narcissus, Iris, and Tulipa was Suguipo and Suchon, although unfavorable weather conditions prevailed during the experiment period.
